Offer multiple currencies
A campaign sometimes reaches donors spread across several countries. The Currencies tab lets them donate in their own currency, while you keep a clear view of your fundraising.
Your campaign is always offered in your organization's main currency. You can add other currencies, each of two possible kinds: virtual or real.
Virtual or real: the essential differenceβ
This is the most important distinction to understand before configuring anything.
| Virtual currency | Real currency | |
|---|---|---|
| What the donor sees | The amount converted into their currency (e.g. "β $55") | The amount in their currency, which they actually pay |
| Currency actually paid | Your organization's main currency | The chosen currency |
| Who collects | Your main association | A dedicated association you designate |
| Tax receipt | Issued by the main association | Issued by the dedicated association |
| Prerequisite | None | An association configured for that currency |
In one sentence:
- Virtual = a simple reading aid. The donation is still collected by you, in your main currency. It is just a converted display to reassure a foreign donor about the order of magnitude.
- Real = an actual collection in another currency, through another legal entity. Use it when you truly have an association abroad (or another currency) that can receive the funds and issue its own tax receipts.
How to choose between the twoβ
Example. An organization based in the United Kingdom (main currency: the pound) launches a campaign. It adds:
- the dollar as virtual: an American donor sees "β $130" but pays in pounds into the UK account;
- the euro as real, tied to its French association: a French donor pays in euros, is collected by the French association, and receives a French tax receipt.
The counter always stays in your main currencyβ
Whatever currency a donor uses, the campaign counter progresses in your organization's main currency.
Each donation in another currency is converted at the day's exchange rate to feed the total and the progress bar. You keep a single, consistent view of your fundraising, never adding up different currencies.
Add a currencyβ
- 1
Open the Currencies tab
From Campaign layout, click the Currencies tab.
- 2
Click Β« Add a currency Β»
A new configuration row appears.
- 3
Choose the currency
Select the currency to offer (dollar, euro, shekel, etc.). The main currency is already offered by default: no need to add it.
- 4
Choose the kind: virtual or real
Select Virtual (display conversion) or Real (dedicated association).
- 5
For a real currency: choose the association
Select the collecting association. Only associations configured for that currency appear in the list.
- 6
Label (optional)
You can give the currency a readable name (e.g. "US Dollar").
- 7
Save
Click Save. The currency is immediately offered to donors on the public page.
Set product prices per currencyβ
If your campaign offers products (suggested amounts, gala seats, sponsorship tiers, etc.), you can set a specific price per real currency.
- If you enter a price for a real currency, that exact amount is offered to the donor in that currency.
- If you leave the field empty, the price is converted automatically at the day's rate from the price in the main currency.
This lets you display "round" prices in each currency (for example β¬50 and βͺ200 rather than a conversion down to the cent).
Per-currency prices are set in each product's form. See Manage products.
What the donor sees on the public pageβ
When at least one extra currency is configured, a currency selector appears next to the amount field on the donation page:
- when choosing a virtual currency, the donor sees a banner indicating the amount actually charged in the main currency;
- when choosing a real currency, the donor sees the country and the association that will collect the donation, and pays directly in that currency.
If no extra currency is configured, nothing changes: the donor simply sees your main currency symbol, as before.
Pledges and monthly donationsβ
The currency choice also applies to pledges and monthly donations:
- a pledge made in a real currency is tied to the matching association;
- the settlement link sent to the donor automatically takes them to the payment page in the right currency.
Key takeawaysβ
- The main currency is always offered; you don't have to add it.
- Virtual = converted display, collection in your main currency.
- Real = actual collection in another currency, by a dedicated association that issues its own tax receipt.
- The counter and goals stay in the main currency; each donation is converted at the day's rate.
- A real currency requires an association configured for that currency.
- Product prices can be set manually per currency, or converted automatically.
